Technically, its VESA DisplayHDR 1000 rating means it should have a black level of just 0.05cd/m2, but my testing equipment only lets me test in non-HDR.
It supports height, tilt, and swivel adjustment, and the rear of the cabinet has a square pattern of four holes spaced 100mm (3.9 inches) apart to support wall mounting with a VESA bracket. Despite skewed greens and narrow viewing angles, it …
That said, although the MSI Optix MPG34CQR has a smaller, not-as-wide screen (it's limited to a 21:9 aspect ratio), it offers a superior gaming experience (including a near-record-low input lag score in our testing) and remains our Editors' Choice among ultra-wide gaming monitors.
Its 49-inch (measured diagonally) VA screen, set in a matte-black cabinet, has a native resolution of 5,120 by 1,440 pixels at an ultra-wide 32:9 aspect ratio. The latter is perhaps a touch low compared to other HDR displays I’ve tested recently – I’d normally expect an Nvidia G-Sync Ultimate display to have a DCI-P3 gamut coverage of at least 90%, for example – but I do remember having similar issues with the Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ due to its confusing onboard menu settings. Accidents happen, and we will cover a replacement monitor for your customers when they do. Go have a lie down, Internet.

It’s also not clear what its “SDR Variable Backlight” option does, or how its Desktop, Hybrid or Gaming backlight modes differ from one another. playing games on a good ultrawide monitor. On that basis alone, the AOC is kind of a no brainer, but the real question is whether it’s actually worth paying this kind of premium for such fancy set of specs in the first place. Yes, this monitor costs £1875 big ones. Final Fantasy XV exhibited lots of rich, deep colours when I was ambling up and down the hills of Duscae, and when I stuck my calibrator on the in-game sun to measure its peak brightness, it came back with a whopping 1200-odd cd/m2, which is quite a jump from its non-HDR peak brightness of around 550cd/m2.
There's a new Nvidia G-Sync Ultimate monitor in town. The super duper ultrawide Samsung CRG9, for example, gives you an even wider resolution of 5120×1440 for £1100 / $1300, and that’s a VESA DisplayHDR 1000 rated display as well, albeit a FreeSync one rather than a full-fat G-Sync screen. AOC's Agon AG493UCX is a 49-inch ultra-wide monitor that provides an enjoyable gaming experience and does a decent job handling multimedia content, as well. Image Setup also has HDR settings.
Most gaming monitors that use this standard have a 1ms MPRT; the Aorus KD25F, which I recently reviewed, had an even snappier 0.5ms MPRT. This matches the screen size and resolution of several 49-inch business monitors, the Dell Ultrasharp 49 Curved Monitor, the Philips Brilliance 499P9H, and the LG 49WL95C-W. Its screen size is the same as the Samsung CHG90—the only other 49-inch gaming monitor we have reviewed—but the Samsung's native resolution is lower (3,840 by 1,080 pixels).
The AG353UCG also comes with a four-port USB 3.1 (Gen 1) hub, one of which can charge other devices once you enable it in the monitor’s onboard menu system. The AG271UG has several external input ports, but also has dedicated USB 3.0 and device-charging ports, making it easy for you to charge your mobile device or … Either way, 0.11cd/m2 is still pretty damn low in the grand scheme of things, and there was more than enough inky blacks and fine shadow detail on display in games. The HDR Movie mode, which runs as an emulation rather than true HDR when handling standard-definition video, even had beneficial effects on decidedly non-HDR videos, such as a clip of an elevated train ride I uploaded to YouTube about a dozen years ago. It has a higher native resolution (5,120 by 1,440 pixels, aka 5K) but a lower refresh rate (120Hz) than the similarly equipped Samsung CHG90. (No bracket comes included.). Not all games can run well on its ultra-wide screen. It’s less of a problem when you’re playing games with a headset on or you’ve got your sound blasting out of a pair of speakers, but when you’re just typing away and doing regular desktop tasks, it can be distracting when you’re just on your lonesome and there aren’t any other ambient sounds to drown it out.
One incident covered, for up to 1-year from the date of the purchase. Straight out of the box, my X-Rite i1 DisplayPro calibrator showed it was displaying a near-perfect 99.8% of the sRGB colour gamut and an impressive 85.3% of the HDR-grade DCI-P3 gamut. This is a minor issue on small monitors, but it is at the very least an annoyance with the already enormously wide and ungainly AG493UCX. I’m also not too concerned by my black level recording of 0.11cd/m2, either. It’s not just the design that’s been improved, either, as the AG353UCG also brings a number of other key upgrades over its predecessor, namely a proper HDMI 2.0 input rather than the old and rather limiting 1.4 standard, a higher refresh rate of 200Hz as opposed to 100Hz, and four USB 3.1 ports rather than two. That's the equivalent of two 27-inch QHD (2,560-by-1,440-pixel) monitors placed side by side. In our testing, it proved effective as such.

The pronounced curvature makes for a more immersive, enveloping gaming experience than you would get with a flat panel. It’s a lot, no doubt about it, but given the 27in Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ and Acer Predator X27 both cost £2300 and £2100 respectively when they first came out two years ago, it’s actually not quite as horrendous as I was expecting. A beast of a monitor, the AG493UCX measures 18.4 by 47 by 12.1 inches, and it weighs 31.7 pounds. Plus, I mean, just look at this thing.
