This is exactly how hegemony works: by placing the basic tenets of this order beyond a point where we even think to question them, many people are led to assume that the current state of affairs is merely the inevitable result of natural phenomena. After the unrestrained greed of financial institutions brought the world to its knees, and after tax-payers bailed out those same institutions responsible for the crisis, the rules of the game appear more or less unchanged.
Therefore, Gramsci concluded that the state had no other option but to rely on coercion to maintain order, meaning that in reality it was much less powerful than we would expect given its brutish and autocratic character.

An important issue that any movement committed to structural change should consider is to challenge the stranglehold that the neoliberal hegemony exerts on political discourse, for it is precisely there that consent to its worldview is produced.
The way neoliberalism has positioned itself within the field of political theory has effectively displaced alternative political paradigms capable of challenging its hegemony.
