OJOph Researches into the Early History of Mankind and the Development of Civilization (1865), which immediately established his reputation as a leading anthropologist, elaborated the thesis that cultures past and present, civilized and primitive, must be studied as parts of a single history of human thought.

Culture, he said, is. Eight years later he returned to Oxford to give lectures and stayed there as keeper of the university’s museum, becoming reader in anthropology in 1884 and the first professor of anthropology in 1896.

OJMM In social science: Cultural anthropology …Tylor’s landmark work of 1871, Primitive Culture, is the part of human behaviour that is learned. From cultural anthropology more than from any other single social science has come the emphasis on the cultural foundations of human behaviour and thought in society. ABSTRACT: The study of mortuary practices of Megalithic communities and its use as the basis for reconstructing the past society is unique in archaeology as it represents the direct and purposeful culmination of conscious behavior of the followers of this cultural trait. JSBS His last book, Anthropology, an Introduction to the Study of Man and Civilization (1881), is an excellent summary of what was, late in the 19th century, known and thought in that field.

IJIDS The study of the mortuary practices of the Kurumbas raises two important questions-firstly, how far this tribe can be seen as the actual successor of Megalithic builders of Kerala and, secondly, how does the social differentiation within the Kurumba community got reflected in its mortuary practices, just like the Megalithic builders of the past. September MME Spiritual beings are held to affect or control the events of the material world, and man's life here and hereafter; and it being considered that they hold intercourse with men, and receive pleasure or displeasure from human actions, the belief in their existence leads naturally, and it might almost be said inevitably, sooner or later to active reverence and propitiation. (1871). Travelling in arduous and sometimes dangerous circumstances, they searched for the Toltec remains, Tylor under Christy’s experienced direction gaining practical knowledge of archaeological and anthropological fieldwork.

“The past,” he wrote, “is continually needed to explain the present, and the whole to explain the part.” Tylor’s fame, however, is based chiefly upon the publication of Primitive Culture. Thus, “culture” should be studied not only in the artistic and spiritual achievements of civilizations but in man’s technological and moral accomplishments made at all stages of his development.
