Primarily a journalistic non-fiction program, it has also featured essays, memoirs, field recordings, short fiction, and found footage. I came to it relatively late, only subscribing to the weekly podcast two years ago, but I’ve tried to play catch-up the best I can. Most importantly, though, the stories of religion always acknowledge one really important thing—faith is messy. However, TOMS was hardly Mycoskie’s first business endeavor and while he does share a deep history of how a trip to Argentina inspired TOMS, he also talks about his personal life and what made him a serial entrepreneur.
The show's title perfectly sums up the breadth and scope of a program that tackles everything from the trivial to the highly consequential, often back-to-back in the same themed hour. This was the very first episode of This American Life that I ever heard, and let me tell you, randomly switching my car radio over to WABE only to hear some seemingly deranged woman ranting about The Little Mermaid was quite a strange experience. A week and a half ago, a friend and I braved the sprawly horrors of Atlanta’s Hollywood 24 to see the live broadcast of This American Life’s second-annual live show. (See it penciled in almost as an afterthought above.) Since 1995, Glass has hosted This American Life, perhaps the most popular public radio show ever produced and---before its hugely successful spin-off Serial—the most popular podcast in the U.S. This episode about the 2008 financial crisis was a collaboration between NPR News and This American Life, a weekly public radio show that has become the 800-pound gorilla of podcasting.

I definitely had a driveway moment with this one, and I’ve been stuck on the show ever since (though, admittedly, it’s rare that an episode lives up to the sheer weirdness of that particular segment). And there may be no better example of that than this hour-long story tracing the rise and fall of a young fundamentalist preacher, who went from basically sitting at the right hand of Oral Roberts to preaching the idea of the nonexistence of Hell. Lately, I’ve found myself pressing the show onto more and more friends, kinda shocked that not every single person I know already listens to it. Stream SHOWTIME series, movies, documentaries, sports and much more all on your favorite devices. Though Glass would surely balk at such high praise, I think his show has done more to help Americans know and understand ourselves over the last twenty years than nearly anything else on radio, TV, or the podcasting world. The most classic episodes induce both weeping and laughter, and this one is right up there with the best. That’s some serious power, folks.
