The rooms I saw were bunk rooms holding 4-6 people and all in good condition and clean. If drinking a beer at a picnic table and watching your kids swim and catch tadpoles (after a beautiful hike and before dinner is served to you) is your jam, this is the place for you. If you want to be in the the area for some easyish hikes with kids and no-frills accommodations, this is your place! Unless you want to buy something at their inflated "store." If it weren't for the toilets, I'd give Cardigan four stars, but the toilets really take away from the experience. They were bossy and ill informed on hospitality.

If a campsite is going to have toilets, it is better to have a few in a central location... no toilets at all would also be just fine, it is camping, after all.

Cardigan Lodge offers full service (including towels, linens, and meals) daily in the summer, early fall, and over February vacation, and on weekends in winter. The composters should have no smell but they are not all properly maintained. We spent hours by the clean, clear pond hunting salamanders and tadpoles with nets provided by the on-site naturalist (! However, on our last day and night, we were left with a very bitter taste, which is why it get's two stars.
I highly recommend the AMC Cardigan Lodge for anyone wanting to get away from it all. And it does not provide fine gourmet dining. For a very reasonable price (as compared to hotels or Airbnb) you get all the beauty and peace of being way out in the mountains but with the amenities of a bunk room, full bathroom facilities, all meals cooked and served!!! If you are coming for fancy meals that you can go home and write reviews about, then you are making a mistake. This is a super kid-friendly lodge with multiple activities that are created just for kids. Waterfalls, a small pond for swimming, and a nature trail await young explorers. And you and your adult friends are relaxing and watching it all happen. So far so good!!

Campers are not welcome in the lodge. This is an Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) run facility for you, the hiker, to have a place to rest your weary head after an exhilarating trek and perhaps join in the fun of other hikers there for the night.
