This trail is really a 5 mile long fire road. [29] This relatively minor eruption was a release of pressure consistent with ongoing dome building. Fire road also makes it easy to "socially distance" on the trail. Geologists and historians determined much later that the eruption took place in 1800, marking the beginning of the 57 year-long Goat Rocks Eruptive Period (see geology section). The first 5 miles of this trail is uphill and, once you hit the fire road, there is almost no shade. The peak is climbed year-round, although it is more often climbed from late spring through early fall. Trail climbs and climbs, but doesn't feel as bad as other, similar trails since its never that steep. The views are certainly worth the exhaustion. BE MONTANA AWARE
