Cohn was a former federal prosecutor who prosecuted the Rosenbergs' in 1951 and then became assistant to Joseph McCarthy during the McCarthy communist hearings of 1954. The only son of a Jewish mother who vigorously doted on him, and with whom he shared a superficial ugliness that matched his internal repugnance, Cohn became a star thanks to his formidable legal mind and, just as importantly, his eagerness to break any and all laws that stood in the way of his goals. “Where’s My Roy Cohn” is a documentary covering the life of this flamboyant and obviously intelligent lawyer who, in his early 20’s became counsel for the infamous Joseph McCarthy and his Committee investigating allegedly un-American activities in government.

There's nothing much new here, including the implication that Cohn was a key factor in the introduction of the combative, zero-sum style of modern politics. is a great doc that’s a tad aesthetically stale, but it will have a mass appeal even to those unfamiliar with Cohn and uninterested in politics and law. In his mind, Cohn was still the hero of his own story.

Regardless of whether you think he was a man of integrity or the reason authoritarians have risen to power, [the film] is entertaining because Cohn was himself an entertainer.

It is, however, timely enough, and fascinating in a reptilian kind of way. An absorbing and fascinating documentary about a political powerbroker who worked behind the scenes where he had much more influence than he ever would have had if he had actually run for elective office.

The film features a wealth of archive footage -- so much so that it almost relies on it a little too much in telling its story -- but its team of analysts helps to balance that, offering colorful and telling commentary about a manipulative puppet master who has left quite a legacy -- and not one that anyone should be proud of. Those were fame, money and influence over the country’s elites, as made abundantly clear by the many talking heads featured in “Where’s My Roy Cohn?” Cohn’s public image was further enhanced by the aforementioned Army-McCarthy hearings, which centered around his desire to get special military treatment for his colleague (and rumored boyfriend) G. David Schine. even seems to predict how the tidal wave of high crimes and misdemeanors might play out.

Tyrnauer’s flashes of compassion for this self-hating Jew and homosexual — taught from childhood to feel ashamed of what he was and who he was — remind us that his subject’s toxic, insidious amorality did not go to the grave with him.
Though he only factors into a relatively small portion of Tyrnauer’s latest, Trump looms large over these proceedings, since Cohn’s preferred codes of conduct – skirting the law and playing dirty at every opportunity; using lies and deceptions to divert attention away from misdeeds; feigning patriotism as a means of cloaking criminality – are echoed, on a daily basis, by our current commander-in-chief.
The film suffers to some extent from having such an unsympathetic subject - and the attempts to humanise him only serve to make his actual behaviour seem venaler. Now director Tyrnauer, whose sex swipes at dead movie stars in his last documentary somehow seemed credible, delivers a real hitjob that remains more absorbing than on point.

is more interested in Cohn's hypocrisy, as a closeted gay Jewish man closely aligned with the far right and criminal underworld who trafficked in the same sort of ad hominem smear campaigns that homophobes and anti-Semites used against his own people, than in closely examining the systems of power that propped him up for decades.
Worst of all, Cohn might actually fancy this condemnation. It's jammed with information that make shock the unknowing. When Donald Trump asked out loud, "where's my Roy Cohn," he was fondly thinking about his past relationship and mentor Roy Cohn. Entertaining but highly conventional documentary.
