I knew that before it was recorded. Like all great artists doomed to suffer the slings and arrows of an outrageous public, he naively believed his vision would carry the day, and both sales and validation would follow. But music celebrating “Donald Duck and Vaudeville?” Seriously uncool. One of the joys of the album is that they did it all with a basic band. There have been 1-, 2- and 3-CD sets, with all sorts of bonus tracks and unreleased stuff and I bought a couple. The twin concepts of memory and preservation are further explored in the perfectly cheeky “Picture Book,” an incredibly catchy tune describing the family tradition of flipping through the picture albums (another lovely experience blasted away by digital technology). Some may be more obscure to Americans. Can’t all five discs be put on one Blu-ray audio where it will be more affordable?
I would never have said this in 1968 or 1978 or 1998, but for me (now) the best of the British bunch is The Village Green Preservation Society. Nicky must have been a musical masochist as well as a gentleman, because he dutifully sat down and reproduced that pounding sound which was associated with so many of our records at the time. 4.
I think we can all truly empathize with the line, “Don’t show me no more, please,” especially in this phone-camera dominated world of selfies.

I already own the 3cd version but I admit I’m a sucker for ‘alternate’ mixes and the like. Ray could never have predicted the SmartPhone and Selfie which makes this song more relevant with every year that passes. The first is described as “recorded 26th November” (and sounds live) the second as “mixed” then, with original studio audio from March 1968. Revealing, but how many times would you want to hear it? We move to 1973 re-recordings.

“Starstruck” is the only single from Village Green, and it wasn’t successful either. But memories of people can remain. Outside a bed and breakfast. (backing track) once the vocals are removed. Seeing all these comments about lost tapes from Kinks early releases, really saddens me; but at least this is something. Fabulous backing, and shifted lyrics: God save Drury Lane, Vaudeville and Variety … (Drury Lane rather than Donald Duck, who returns at the end)

Just as Days was omitted from VGPS, the songs from VGPS don’t feature much on compilations. I buy it for me, it’s no different to stamp collecting or train spotting. It is both anthemic and eulogistic, so perhaps an unsurprisingly popular choice for funerals: the lyrics provide one of the most eloquent goodbyes imaginable. People who collect at this level aren’t “rich” they are passionate The Stones were decent in the other two areas (their lyrics aren’t great but fit nicely with their style), but they weren’t too strong at melody or harmony.
